Rules for Students

Summer Youth Institute

Training Youth Leaders to Discuss, Engage, and Uniquely Solve Community Issues

Rules

THE PENALTY FOR DISOBEYING THE RULES IS DISMISSAL FROM THE SUMMER YOUTH INSTITUTE!

  1. The most important rule: Get the most out of your experience at the Summer Youth Institute and stay at the University of Mississippi. Learn as much as you can. Get to know as many people as you can. Expand your horizons. Have a great time!
  2. The Summer Youth Institute is a year-round experience. Youth who get involved, stay involved, and show initiative in their communities will be rewarded for their efforts.
  3. The Summer Youth Institute is intended to be a rewarding, educational experience for you. If you have any academic or professional interests that you would like to explore at the University of Mississippi, please let us know. We would love to place you in contact with the wonderful resources here at the University of Mississippi.
  4. You are expected to attend all activities of the program and to show up on time, awake, and ready to learn. Habitual problems with lateness or falling asleep during sessions will result in exclusion from trips and other fun activities.
  5. During the day, signing in and out is not necessary unless you leave campus (though you do not leave campus at any time without permission from the Director). If you leave the dorm after dinner, you must sign out and sign back in when you return for the sake of security and so we can locate you, should the need arise. Sign out procedures will be reviewed at the beginning of the session.
  6. Remember that other residence halls, fraternity and sorority houses, and campus apartments are completely off limits.
  7. You are not to leave campus at any time without permission from the Director of the Summer Youth Institute.
  8. No changing roommates. The purpose of the Institute is to meet new people and have new experiences. Rooming with new people is a part of this.
  9. You must be in the dorm building each night by 10:30 PM. Lights out is at 11:30 PM.
  10. You must stay in your wing. Boys are not allowed on the girls’ floor; girls are not allowed on the boys’ floor. Violation of this rule results in dismissal from the program.
  11. If you want to go to the Turner Center to swim or play basketball during a break, you need to have a counselor with you: at least 1 counselor for every 3 students. They will not let you in if you do not have a counselor accompanying you. The rest of the Turner Center is off-limits.
  12. The purpose of the Summer Youth Institute is to learn and to make our communities better. If we notice inappropriate sexual behavior, it will result in immediate dismissal from the program.
  13. All laundry must be finished before 10:00 PM in order to make curfew.
  14. Cell phones are a luxury. Phones and laptop computers are not allowed during SYI workshops and other functions. If cell phones become a nuisance outside of programs, we will confiscate them for the rest of the Institute.
  15. No bullying, exclusionary behavior, or disrespecting other participants and/or staff will be tolerated.
  16. Remember, you are not to drive your car or ride in any non-university vehicle while attending the program. Even if leaving with parents, students should have pre-arranged departure (or notify the Director if it’s a surprise parental visit).
  17. Possession of alcohol, illegal drugs, or prescription drugs prescribed to someone else is against Summer Youth Institute and University rules, as well as against the law. Smoking for underage students is also illegal and not allowed during SYI. If this rule is broken, it will result in immediate dismissal from the program.
  18. When in doubt, ASK.
  19. In the event of an emergency, contact the main office of the William Winter Institute for Racial Reconciliation at (662) 915-6734 or Patrick Weems, Youth Project Coordinator, at (601) 668-6211
